Life as a trainee in a pandemic

Hello, I’m Charlie the new trainee solicitor at Holden & Co and I’m currently based in the family team.

Pursuing a training contract during a pandemic added an unexpected hurdle, with many law firms working from home and pausing recruitment as they were unable to offer the usual training environment. You can imagine my excitement when I got the offer to join the team at Holden & Co on my birthday – the best lockdown gift a law graduate could wish for!

I started my training contract on the 1st of April and wondered what effect the COVID-19 restrictions would have on my experience. As we are on the pathway out of the pandemic I have been lucky to be able to work from the office and meet my colleagues in person, however, this has been via socially distanced hellos across carefully spaced desks rather than the networking and lunch meet ups I had pictured during my university studies.

Meetings with clients are different too, most are still being conducted virtually or over a phone call but I’ve been able to accompany my supervisor to experience some face to face appointments – well masked face to masked face appointments! Observing my first hearings as a trainee involved waiting to be let into a virtual platform such as CVP rather than entering the atmosphere of a court room.

There are some positives of having to shift to more virtual meetings as it has allowed me to attend more meetings and hearings than if I needed to be physically present so I am absorbing more examples in that way. It will be interesting to see if moving forward the legal sector adopts the use of virtual platforms for certain aspects and how this will impact ways of working throughout my two year training contract.

It has been a little strange starting my training contract in the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s definitely going to be an experience to remember and grow from.
